For some people, it's a way of getting attention. After all, who has more people on them at an anime convention than someone dressed up as a popular character?
But it's also done to just have fun or express yourself. You can let loose while cosplaying, throw away your ego and tell yourself, "I can do this because I'm not me, I'm _____."
That sounds a little crazy, but most people do something similar (without sticking out as much) by wearing clothes they normally wouldn't wear or something along those lines.
Throw away your ego? I don't know about that...
I don't cosplay, but I don't really see much wrong with it. I mean, most people have some sort of retreat from reality, because most people's lives pretty much suck. Plus people who are into that sort of thing are often seen a certain way by "mainstream" society, and it's an opportunity to be seen as cool by like-minded people, I guess.
