It works like Reddit upvoting where you start off with +1 (your own vote). If you don't like it *shrug*.

I'm gonna guess that AutoUpvotes is in place so that you can't Upvote your own post in an attempt to artificially generate Upvotes to get ahead of everyone else like a sad twat; you can only Downvote yourself or reimplement the Upvote you start off with.
It's simple yet brilliant.
