Can't remove favorites

Hi,
This was a problem for a long time on iPad. For whatever reason it seemed to get better recently, but as of today, I once again can't remove favorites. Am I stupid? Do I do something other than tap the check mark?

I just managed to remove one favorite but I can't do it again. There has to be something I'm missing. What is supposed to be the trigger for removing from favorites vs just navigating to the favorites page? Is there a tutorial? Have any other posters ever removed anything from their favorites, and can you tell me how?
Edit: I am almost positive that 9 times out of ten, the favorites link covers the check/uncheck element on the page and it is not possible to click it. Please fix this irritating and long-standing bug.
Double edit: this has something to do with the :hover logic. There is some way to click it but I can't figure out what it is. I've managed to remove an item a few times now, but it's very difficult and inconsistent.
