The browser on the PS3 is a lousy piece of software and doesn't support gzip-compressed responses; we "fixed" this a year ago by disabling gzip for all PS3-originated requests.
But the problem is that you're still getting served gzip responses from Varnish, our HTTP pagecache. Varnish only services requests from anonymous users and is bypassed when you're logged in. When I get home tonight I'll see if I can make Varnish not serve cached pages to PS3 user-agents to finally resolve the issue.
