I have to admit I kind of like it the way it is, but that may not so much be the lack of an existing banner, but rather just that it is a change compared to a banner that I've seen stay the same (more or less) for nearly two years.

It certainly does feel odd without the banner there. Like we've been through an apocalypse or something. I guess a rollback kinda does qualify as one. Klown has the right idea for this situation.

Yeah, the top of the site looks too plain as I have grown accustomed to having a banner up there. A new banner would be ideal, it has been like two years since we had a new one.
