Anyways, fortunately, I had gotten an extension of at max 2 days. The professor somehow did not go to class due to some personal problem or something like that. Heard she'll be away for the weekend. But she'll probably ask us to submit the thesis by email. But still, more time!!!!

Epimenides Paradox

A typical description of the problem is given in the book Gödel, Escher, Bach, by Douglas Hofstadter. This is a classic variation of the Liar Paradox:

"Epimenides was a Cretan who made one immortal statement: 'All Cretans are liars.'"

If his statement was true then Epimenides, who himself is a Cretan, would be a liar. If he was a liar, would this entire statement be false and; thus, mean that creators are not liars instead? However if Cretans are not liars, then this statement would be true stating that all Cretans are indeed liars, and so on…

This paradox arises from the element of self-reference. A number of philosophers have suggested to solve this by this method:

As Epimenides is a Cretan, then he is a liar

Therefore, he was lying about the fact that all Cretans are liars

Just because the statement was false, does not mean that its opposite "All Cretans are honest." is true.

We can say that Epimenides lied and the truth was "There are Cretans who lie and there are honest ones."

We can avoid the paradox by assuming that Epimenides is a liar; that in conclusion:

All Cretans are liars -> Epimenides: Liar -> "All Cretans are liars": false -> Proposed truth: "Some Cretans are liars" - > Assume that Epimenides is a liar -> He lied about the number of Cretans who are liars

However, if we assume that Epimenedes is honest........
