The only difference is that Google is a search engine which provides links to websites which most dictionaries won't do.
Google provides more than a few benefits over a standard electronic dictionary. It provides multiple and recognized sources for a single definition and links to full-blown explanations for etymology as well as automatic translation between languages given you use the correct query.

Speaking of which, why talk about finding definitions? All OP said was he was using google to check for typos.
Because it's relative to the context of the conversation, we're talking about dictionaries after all and Google uses dictionary databases to power its spell check engine.
Personally I don't see a reason to use anything but Google when it comes to researching literary matters.
