I knew there were others working on it, but I was still dumb enough to delay the release. T_T But no longer. I present to you,
Anime Release #14 -
15 Bishoujo Hyouryuuki OVA #1 (Tales of the 15 Beautiful Girls who Drifted Ashore)!
Oh man, what a project. The amount of work and time put into this one was tremendous. I think I've watched it well over 10 times in its entirety during the subbing process and spent God knows how many hours on it.
Bob64 also had the reencode the thing several times because I'm a dumb perfectionist who always had little tweaks and improvements to make every time I watched it. Oh well, at least it's done and released now.
I've decided to group the translation notes per girl, so here you go:
Kotoko Yotsuya
She's basically the childhood friend of Kazuma, living I think it was opposite to him (it's been a while since I read those descriptions in the mag, I'll have to double-check), and Kazuma promised her he'd marry her when they got older. (But he'll probably go pimp out every single girl he sees; from the title we know there will be at least fifteen; Kotoko will turn yandere, and there will be blood, and...) nah. Kotoko's probably
too nice for that to happen. >_>
Saori Asou
This girl is interesting in that practically everything she does (whether it be talking or making decisions) has to do with being
fast. The adjective "hayai" (速ã„) is common throughout her scenes, and while it normally means "fast" or "early", when used to describe a guy sexually it can also mean being a quick shot (or premature ejaculator). She'd probably think it's a good thing though.
And let's not even talk about fast eggs. *rolls eyes*
Espresso Sabatini
Next up on the list is our masochist bondage freak! Of note is that Kazuma calls her "Coffee", but really, it shouldn't take a genius to figure out why. Sabatini, apparently, is an extremely famous Italian restaurant in Rome. And even cooler is the fact that there's
actually one here in Hong Kong... I suppose I'll go try it out sometime.
In Japan, people like to talk about whether one is S or M as a personality trait. The terms, which refer to sadism and masochism, don't have quite as strong a connotation as it does in English: in Japanese, if you're S, you like to give (or be in control), and if you're M, you like to receive (or be under control). Although, in this case, it's safe to say that Espresso is masochist in every sense of the word...
I suppose the last thing that needs mentioning here is that Coffee's line "I'm falling, I'm falling!" is a pun. In Japanese, the verb "ochiru" (è½ã¡ã‚‹ã€å •ã¡ã‚‹) means to fall or descend, but it can also be used to mean a fall from grace, or from virtuousity; it's often applied to people who move on to sexual fetishes such as bondage.
Monmon Lee
Her given name, "monmon" (èŒèŒ), uses the same kanji as the Japanese otaku-adjective "moe" (èŒãˆ), which is that surge of blood feeling one gets when one sees something... well, moe. Kazuma calls her "China-san", which doesn't really mean "Miss China" per se, but rather "Miss Chinadress", since her defining appearance-characteristic is, no surprises here, a Chinadress.
You guys might've noticed the rather disturbingly stereotypical Chinese background music and the clash of gongs, but it's all good fun. Monmon appends "ne" to the end of every sentence she says; "ne" is normally placed at the end of a sentence to mean "right?" or "isn't it?" Those of you who speak both Chinese and Japanese will perhaps immediately notice that Monmon is
imitating the Chinese language. This is not to say Chinese speakers append "ne" to the end of every sentence (because they don't), but we
do append a variety of sounds to the end of every sentence to give additional meaning (or sometimes, none) to the phrase spoken. I thought it was a cute detail.
I debated for the longest time whether to literally translate the Japanese saying "毒を食らã‚ã°çš¿ã¾ã§", which literally means "since I ate poison I'll go all the way to the plate", or "since I've had the poison I might as well lick the bowl clean". The actual meaning shouldn't be hard to see: "since I've started (on something harmful), I might as well go all the way"; I figured you guys are smart people, and so I went with the literal translation.
