So much grind and the gameplay got so luck dependant - you could have a really good set up, but then your cards would attack all the strong cards and the enemy would attack all your weak ones. Geh.

Ha ha, true that. Derping RNG can ruins every plans you make there. But they have made different mechanic in KR and JPN Servers (SGO EX or S2, I forgot the name) which works like Million Arthur (if I recall correctly), so RNG and luck don't play major role there.
