I would say that the
act of piracy does not hurt content creators.
But I think that the
existence of piracy does in fact hurt creators.

Piracy is why pirates buy things. Give the people a glance at the material and people will buy. Of all the books that was true, except alluring woman because only one chapter was ever translated. The people knew what they were buying was what they wanted. All because they read it before in scan form.
I really want to believe this. I think that it's true for some of us more committed fans but I don't think it's true for the majority of people.
I think actually that this is also a social issue. A lot of people who are used to pirating don't want to hear about paid options. Really, why would they?
1. No need to spend your hard earned dollars.
2. If they keep pirating, they're not actually missing out anything because they get all the same shit eventually.
3. They come back to that first point and say hey, "I didn't hurt anyone doing this. There are 0 problems with my piracy habit."
4. Sort of the same as 2, as far as the individual is concerned, piracy is the winning play. Get everything, spend nothing. Using 3 as a shield they don't even have to feel guilty.
So I think what we see is that the majority of people (pretty sure at least 80% if not 90 have already ditched FAKKU) don't give a fuck and don't have any reason to start giving a fuck other than having a conscience. When piracy gets discussed, you just get more people spouting the same stuff because confirmation bias works wonders for this kind of thing.
