Comissioning FAQ
Q: What's a Comission?
A: Paying a scanlator to get something translated.
Most translation teams will also release the commissioned stuff on their own site. Requesting exclusive (not released to anyone else) commissions may cost extra. Some translation teams frown on commissions later released for profit, others accept such use.
Q: Beyond money what do I need?
A: A RAW (scan) of sufficient quality.
Only a handful of translation teams have scanners of their own, who're usually busy scanning stuff the team wants to translate anyway. So if you want something translated you'll usually have to provide a RAW of your own.
Most teams are willing to do the cleanup on their own, but if the raws are really atrocious they won't deal with you.
Since nowadays most "translation" sites are compromised either of a team of translator/editor or people who can do both, from this point on I'll just refer to the team as a whole, unless the team/person only specializes in either.
Q: What's a scanlation?
A: A drawn work translated from a foreign language.
Scanlations typically preserve reading direction, so manga/doujinshi will retain right-to-left layout. Whether sound effects are translated vary by scanlator, though typically they're left untranslated as they're hard to replace since they're outside speech bubbles.
Detailed scanlation description:
Scanlation involves three jobs: a scanner, a translator and an editor.
The scanner:
Scans the original manga/doujinshi. Usually some unknown Japanese dude/gal who uploads this on Perfect Dark or some other sharing network... Can also be part of a translation team (e.g. Little White Butterflies Comiket agents) or a guy specializing in scanning. Leveling the pages, ensuring they're of the same resolution, cleanup can all be part of the scanner's job. Good scans debind the original material (so it destroys the manga/doujin!) since that's the only way to ensure the pages are flat. Respect their sacrifice!
The translator:
Creates coherent, English text from all the moonrunes. This usually follows translation conventions so names are typically romanized (written with the latin alphabet), but left untranslated. Some translators preserve honorifics, others don't. Regardless the stance on honorifics, good translations replace foreign idioms with English equivalents. When the used idioms are markedly different from the original but carry a (very) similar meaning, they're are often called Woolseyisms.
The editor:
Takes the translated text and replaces the original text in the speech bubbles. Usually is also the one who ensures that all pages are of the same resolution, that the images have been properly leveled (the whites are white, the blacks are black) and cleaned up if necessary (removing scanning artifacts, moire and so on).
Editing difficulty
Most manga/doujinshi is straighforward, since it's black & white with text in separate speech bubbles.
If the text is not in speech bubbles, or the speech bubbles are transparent the work is a lot harder, since the editor has to preserve the content behind the text.
If the text has specific effects, the editor may need to use different fonts to retain the meaning and if these effects mingle with the graphics his job is harder.
Color pages are harder to work on, since now the editor has to preserve colors.
Color pages with text not in speech bubbles or colored text are the hardest to edit.
The harder something is to edit, the more it may cost!
The more text there is, the more it may cost!
