I'm going to start with some setup and backstory for those of you unfamiliar with this situation. Recently, I have been playing World of Warcraft and participating in the Reddit threads and forums for the game. The game was originally released in 2004. That means that there has been 14 years of content updates and expansions for the game at this point. A lot of people have been clamoring for "the good old days" of just the original game way back then. Often called "vanilla". A few months ago the developers at Blizzard actually announced that they will release a "Classic" server to appease all the people who wanted the old school experience. Now on to the rant.
All these people that are going on and on about how good the original game was and terrible it is now I don't think they really understand what they are saying. Today everyone complains, "its too easy, its too fast to level, I don't have to communicate with people" but you know what I bet people complained about in the original game? "Its too hard, its takes too long to level, why do I have to deal with all these people?" literally, you guys are complaining to go back to the stuff that you complained to get changed.
The general mindset of people has shifted since 2004. Now every new generation wants things to be convenient and offer instant gratification. This has effected the whole world not just this game. This is why we have seen all the changes to WoW over the course of these years to cater to this changing mindset in society.
The problem as far as I can tell isn't the game, the problem is you. Stop complaining, be satisfied with what you have and it won't change.
What I see most people talk about when they say they miss vanilla wow is they talk about community. What they miss isn't old textures, or level 60 cap or anything like that. They miss the game being a social experience where you were essentially required to talk to people to make parties to do dungeons and were essentially required to strategize with those people on how to complete said dungeon. The conversing with other players is really at the heart of what they miss.
If Blizzard has any sense they will have realized this. Honestly, what I thought about when I heard of the launch of the classic server was "They didn't say it was a vanilla server". They keep using the term "classic" I think I even heard the guy that they are going to deliver as close to the classic experience as possible. He doesn't say, we are just going to make vanilla playable. If that was the case it wouldn't take forever to release it.
From what I have gathered most people who are looking forward to the Classic server are expecting just straight up vanilla wow. What I think Blizzard is going to actually do, is change the game in whatever way necessary to bring back that sense of community. If that means removing tools like group finder and making the game more difficult then that's what they will do. But if it doesn't then they won't do it. Anything and everything that has no effect on facilitating more player interaction will not be changed. That is my bet, and that is the end of my rant
Sorry for those of you that don't care about this game but I decided to post it anyway
