Hell, you're not even supposed to be able to use .gif's if you want to be quite technical about it. The only reason why you can do it is because you set the width and height to fit the maximum allowed so you skip through the resize phase.

Just because the resize function doesn't support gifs doesn't mean you're not supposed to be able to use them. I never use that function anyway.
