What's up with all the really long EP1's this season?

They do sometimes like to do these, yes. I guess this time more than usual, if you say there are that many. Probably necessary to properly introduce the series without leaving out important bits.

I saw one, I liked the episode but I feel there was a lot of filler in it.

Because if it doesn't fit in 24 minutes, you have to stretch it to 48. :D

Yeah, that's just the weird rule huh. So far there's 3 anime that have done this.

Will have to see once I actually get around to starting this season.

And then there's Higurashi Sotsu that just started with two episodes (which I also still haven't managed to watch).

Figured I wouldn't have to tell you about that one.

Sequels are usually automatically on my watch list. A lot of those this season...
