Or you can be a permanent member by having some form of the word cat in your name. (i.e. neko, cat, koshka, etc.)

You don't have to have a cat avatar if you don't want it.
For example you can have a cat related picture in your signature. If it's too big, put it in a spoiler. (like the 1st post said. Seriously, did you read the opening post ?)

It is Russian. It is actually spelled "кошка", but the english translation of the characters is "koshka".

I've got a story for you, my uncle loved cats as a child and he wanted to clean a stray that he brought back so he put it in the dryer and when it got out it fucking scratched the shit out of him, shredded the curtains, and then diaherriaed all over the then shredded curtains, ironically that's when his parents got backKids and their notion of doing the right thing... Though, I can never understand how it was ever right to think about putting a live cat inside of a dryer...
