Hey ladies. Long time no chitchat.
I'm looking to well, start looking nicer. Figure I might as well, to help my appearance while job hunting too.
I have pretty much never worn makeup, except for stage use (aka insane colors and styles that would be too intense for daily use) and a bit of lipgloss every so often.
I'm wondering what colors would look best on me in eyeshadows or lipcolor, but as there's no real beauty section to the forums, I figure I might as well post here to ask for suggestions.
I LOVE MAKEUP~!
I would be more than happy to design a few face charts for you (like
these but less dramatic, of course), with product recommendations if you'd like. Feel free to PM so we can talk more about your personal tastes/allergies/etc. if you're interested in this idea. As an example,
this post has a picture of me wearing some very basic neutral eye makeup.
I should mention that I prefer to choose "indie" companies, that is, mostly web-based companies, and/or "organic"/more natural companies (e.g. ones that have signed the
Compact for Safe Cosmetics).
I prefer indies because:
- I like supporting small businesses
- the color selection is usually superior
- they can have pretty awesome customer service, like personalised foundation colors, even
- a lot of companies give samples with every order
- they don't test on animals
- the incidence of nasty/rash-causing stuff (i.e. talc, sulfates, phthalates, parabens, silicones, etc.) is lower because those ingredients usually cost more and/or require a more advanced knowledge of chemistry to mix
- they are more likely to have colors that are vegan-friendly and be upfront when their products aren't*
and most importantly
- I can buy sample sizes cheaply (frequently under $2 a pop!) to see if I like something first
There's also a really great community of bloggers/reviewers, so I rarely buy something without any idea of what it'll look like in person because so many people out there provide "swatches."
*I'm not vegan, but I prefer to purchase cosmetics with minimal animal impact, e.g. I don't feel bad about buying something that contains honey, since that's also an edible product and thus already commercialised, or beeswax, for similar reasons, but I do avoid products using carmine (powdered bugs) or natural musk because I don't feel it's right to kill/maim animals for vanity.
To add to Circe's comments:
Makeup remover: I personally prefer sweet almond oil to olive oil because it's closer to sebum's viscosity and because it doesn't smell like anything.
Eye primer: I prefer Fyrinnae's
Pixie Epoxy. I have literally fallen asleep after concerts with eyeshadow on and then woken up with it still looking nigh perfect using this stuff. Magical, that is all I can say. Wait, and affordable. That, too.
I would recommend getting a nice basic set of brushes. Coastal Scents has
this set, which is a good basic/starter set, and there's also EcoTools (
general and
eye sets), which is available at most drugstores/Ulta.
The eyelash comb in those brush sets is a good way to get clumps out of mascara. I'm with you, though, I find it to be a PITA most of the time (especially with contacts, ugh). I'm lucky that I'm happy with my lashes' length and darkness, so I can get away with no mascara if my eyeshadow is basic/neutral.
If you don't like eyeliner pencil, I might suggest gel liner or using eyeshadow with "fixing fluid" (really 1:3 glycerin/water solution) as liner. Assuming you've had experience painting before, they're fairly simple to use. Plus no sharpening or breakage!
I'd advise against trying to slim your face; I think that's something even professionals mess up a lot of the time, and it's really lighting-dependent. I've always abided by Bobbi Brown's words of wisdom - I consider her THE guru when it comes to wearable, "effortless" makeup - and from what I remember, she's not a fan of contouring.
(Seriously, how can you
not like someone who says supermodels are "genetic freaks of nature"!?)
Her Amazon author page is
here. I've found her books in my local library before, so if you're like me and learn best from books, it's worth a shot seeing if your library does, too.
Man, I kinda wish I lived closer to you so I could do this all in person. I have a lot of fun with it, haha.
(also, sorry for massive post being massive)
