I've heard that's just for bonus exp. I've also heard a trick ball has almost no chance of failing if it hits.Not high level enough to have one of those yet.
But you can throw a curve ball regardless of your level.
How?
Touch the screen where yor pokeball is and start drawing circles around it, it'll start spinning, then you throw and it will draw a curve.
