I always thought it'd be pretty cool to have a game where everything progresses backwards chronologically; The opening scene is the whatever cataclysmic doomsday event- and then the game starts off right at the day before.
For the sake of example:
1st chapter - Day 28. Full party. Character levels, equipment, skills, experience all maxed out.
2nd chapter - Day 24. A little less. Maybe one fewer playable characters. Levels, equipment, etc knocked down a notch.
Continues as such.
7th Chapter - Day 7. Very few player characters. Few weapons. Little experience.
The logic is that the game would get more difficult as the game progresses- but not because of simply scaling things up. It's logical- a greenhorn would have a more difficult time surviving than an experienced veteran.
And then you get rewarded with the last chapter in which you return to day 28 and just unleash hell with your ubers.
And just like any good game- your actions shall affect how things go in that last chapter. It'd be a challenge to make things work out- such as a character death- but with careful planning and good writing, I think it'd be a pretty awesome experience.
Are there no existing post-apocalyptic games like this? It seems like a really obvious thing to do. I don't like the returning to full power part though. Earning a good end to the story should be enough.
