Basically only watch anime and catch 1 word. I can say the way you say "I see" in Japanese apparently sounds just like the word "bitch" in Russian.
There is a product called Rosetta Stone which sounds like it helps people a lot. Not sure if they have Japanese, but would be cheaper going that path instead of paying a semester at a school.

I took Japanese classes in college which were great and I wanted to self-study some more so I decided to coughobtaincough Rosetta Stone, but, in my opinion, it's terrible. Not worth the $300 or so you'd pay. There are websites out there that are way better. My friend's been learning Japanese simply by watching anime and using a flash card program called Anki. However, he's really dedicated and works hard on things he's interested in and now he's even reading books like Harry Potter in Japanese to practice and participates in a raw manga reading group on skype.
Also, this feels more like a Random topic than Serious Discussion.

Start with Pimsleur.
Once about halfway through, start working on Genki.
(You will have to repeat days on Pimsleur because you forget stuff. This is fine.)
Once you get to the end of Genki II, you should at least have a basic handle on grammar. You may have to go through Genki I and II at least a couple times each.
Get a dictionary, your favourite manga, and start cracking.
Use Obenkyo or similar to cram kanji/vocab if you wish.
Find Japanese people to talk to if you can, it helps you not sound like a retard when you eventually need to actually speak the language instead of just read it.

I took Japanese classes at my local community college, but I only took 1 and 2. I also sometimes learn things from watching anime, but my Japanese is still very limited since I stopped at Japanese 2. Learning Kanji was very painful so I didn't bother continuing.

Currently, mainly spoken japanese because of anime and other japanese TV shows. A lot of it has also been through research online. I can fully replicate the accent/pronounciations since I speak perfect english, canadian french and parisian french. I'm currently learning how to read and write hiragana through research aswell.

I know hirigana and katakana pretty well by now. I'm currently trying to translate a doujin. I went through and typed the whole thing out in Word and used Denshi Jisho to look up each kanji by radicals. Now I'm attempting to translate it.
