Actually if the oceans don't get enough fresh water to keep in homeostasis the salt levels will go beyond what life can support. Also plants are living being in a sense.

Granted, too low of a salinity would create hypotonicity, causing fishes to absorb more water into their bodies than normal; everything would be puffy and possibly burst

We're all animals that eat living things. The fact the food you eat doesn't blink doesn't make you any more or less of a monster than the next person.
