Just curious what bad advice to people give for car audio? Or what do you argue about with people on the subject?
Anything and everything can be taken in poorly and then given wrong.
These are some examples of bad advice:
-you don't need boxes/ enclosures for speakers (ib technically has an enclosure)
-sealed sub boxes are louder, lower, punchier and more accurate, and better than ported in every way (they are more accurate and punchier, but ported boxes hit lower, get louder off the same power, etc. If sealed was better in every way, spl cars wouldn't use ported boxes)
-overpowering subs blows them up (as a blanket statement. It doesn't unless you crank the gain too much. Set it correctly and it'll be fine. Amp power isn't on and off, it's dynamic, as with music)
-underpowering subs blows them up (blanket statement, it's wrong. Cranking the gain and causing distortion blows them. You can run a sub off a headunit if you choose to. It won't be loud, but it'll work)
-10" subs are more accurate than 12" subs (not true as a blanket statement/ in general)
-you don't want your subs in your boot as it's a seperate 'room' and they won't sound any good/ loud. (Wrong. Granted withsedans they will block off some sound, but if you positiom a sub in the boot to fire off the tailgate -ie face the boot opening- it amplifies it a tad, making it a bit better. Can't remember the word for it. Refraction or something maybe. If it's not entering well, take out your parcel shelf speakers and use those holes as vents)
-having rear speakers sounds better than having only fronts (granted this is subjective, you'll find having front speakers is the best, as we relate it to watching a band. You don't turn your back to watch a band play live, you face it. Same deal with car audio. The aim for staging is to have it sound like the band is playing on the bonnet of the car)
-running rca's alongside power wire is fine, and won't cause induced noise (it's a hit and miss, but it is believed that doing this is a major cause of noise generally. So, it is fairly common practice to avoid doing this, so you don't get induced noise. Ie, alternator whine)
-a cap is the best way to fix headlight dimming (it's actually a bandaid fix, and hides the problem. Upgrading your battery, wiring to your alt, all grounds in the bay, and making sure the grounds are all (including amp ground) sanded back for maximum contact to the chassis)
-a prefab box is no different to a custom made box (false, as even if both are made for the same sub, generally companies undershoot how big the box should be. More or less. A custom box 99% of the time -if made properly- will be better than a prefab box.)
There is more, a lot of it is situational too. So, that's a short list for you :D
