The majority of people want sleek and slim mobile designs, not square and fat. Personally I love modular designs and I truly hope this succeeds. Unfortunately, consumer products—especially electronics—are often judged by appearance first and functionality second; I can't see this taking off for that very reason.
Ironically, a lot of these sleek and slim phones are guised in thick rubber protective case covers. But I do agree that the already-present clunkiness is an issue. Even if it were sturdy enough to carry without a case, the phone itself would be hard to customize for aesthetics.
I'm also iffy about the design because of unnecessary additional charges. If I decide to change the size of one component, I'd have to adjust the size of other components to fit accordingly.
