This is a mostly English speaking site. American is not a language, so
no one speaks it.

Since the British Isles had/have their own languages its not really the same but do English people act stupid when they encounter people speaking Welsh/Gaelic/Irish? I'm thinking something like a Londoner screaming "This is England, speaking English" in the same way Americans say "This is America, speak American".
You won't encounter many people who still speak purely native Welsh or Irish. Not even most Welsh or Irish speak their native language often.
The British do have a similar attitude towards languages though. To sum it up in short; "You need to speak English or be learning the language, or you're gonna have a bad time". In fact such a mindset was the basis for
this.
