When I was a tennager I thought it was. But back then it was easy to ignore how terrible of a character all the males were in that anime because I was a horny kid and only cared about Asuka, Misato, Rei and Hikari. Looking back it is still quite good but has a decent amount of flaws. It's hard to say which anime is the best, it's not only a subjective thing but also something my memory can't handle. I can't even remember the ones I watched last year let alone throughout my life. The only one that sticks to mind whenever someone asks this is Cowboy Bebop, but that's a biased answer since the OST blows my mind. They left a lot of open ends and simplified a lot of the character back story. But still a great anime, definitely better than NGE. Bear in mind I have only watched the first anime and the first two OVAs.Get a MAL account.

EVA was a good anime. Things I like most about it are the direction of the scenes and the way that scenes are framed (don't know what the right term is).
Things I don't like, well.. Just mainly Shinji. That fucking melodramatic coward which spawned the template for future harem protagonists and other anime cowards.
But EVA inspired many hentai and doujinshis, and for that it is one of the greatest anime ever.

When you mention anime most people think Dragon Ball Gundam
and of course Evangelion
EVA is one of those shows you'll want to watch several times
for me 10 times
It features one of the most complete cast where every character
especial Pen Pen are interesting
At the end of the day as a 26 episode mecha anime
it's easily one of the best there has been and others try to mimic
It mind rapes you but you want more of it!

Shinji gets more manly in the rebuilds... It's kinda scary...
Also, I have watched the original series about 8 times (each time you learn/ find something new out/ get a bit more of the plot) and I've watched 1.11 about 5 times, and 2.22 about 10 times. Seriously, I love it.

I've only watched a few random episodes from waaaaaaaaaaaaay back then. I would love to see the whole thing though but my PTW watch list is still a bit rather big. I'll watch it after I get time for anime again.

OT: I wouldn't say that it was the greatest but it was damn good. I would say it's easily in my top 5. Maybe not top 3. Yeah, number 4 probably.
