While it does have religious origins the actual meaning of christmas has watered down to a universal meaning - bringing family closer together and not being a fucking grump for a single day. *hint hint*
Sure it may have universal meanings now, but it still is technically a "holiday" (which used to be "holy day," hence religious association).
Also, the myth that Jesus Christ was born December 25th 1A.D is well-known. The Bible doesn't actually give any birthdate for him. Instead his theoretical birthdate was worked out using arbitrary dates and events in history. They used Jesus' mention of his 30 year landmark in Luke 3:1,23 as the basis for this calculation.
I only said the 25th is the day they observe Christ's birth. I know full well his actual birth-date is unknown.
In modern society it can seem like that. However if you're like me and don't buy presents for anyone simply because it's a humungous waste of money, time and effort, then what exactly is the problem? You can't change everyone's minds, you can only decide your own path in things like this.
You know what, I can do the same thing not observing Christmas. I never tried to change anyone's mind either. I just stated that I do not observe Christmas, so I don't even know why you brought that up.
Me, I just get my friends a gift card or money towards something they actually want or need. And I myself am satisfied with the same in return.
I believe that while it is rational, it also indicates how distant you are from someone. I mean, don't you think it shows how close you are to someone if you knew they wanted something and actually got it for them instead of giving them money/gift cards/etc? I think it's one of the least thoughtful presents you can get someone, but it also acts as a safety net to ensure you don't fuck up with a present.
