The dvd doesn't work for some things... skyrim dvd didn't work, made a sound like it was scratching the disc... also the fingerprint thing doesn't actually turn on half the time/ doesn't work half the time... I should take it to get fixed, but the gf won't do it... she's too worried they'll wipe the hard drive or something

Laptop repair shops have that horrid habit of wiping the hard drive. My old laptop went in for repair twice, first time because USB ports, sound, audio jacks and CD player all died, USBs, CDs, headphones... nothing would read at all. Second time to get the CD player changed because it wouldn't even eject. Both times the HD was wiped clean.
I can understand why she doesn't want to get it fixed, but if it's really an issue, back up what you can't live without.

Hmm... fair enough then... It was only skyrim that didn't work, so I suppose it's not too bad. Can probably get away without it
