BBCode is a lightweight markup language for forums, which were more commonly referred to Bulletin Boards around the time of its inception; hence its full name, Bulletin Board Code.
Post data is submitted through a form (the "post creation page" in simple terms) specifying an action which is related to a PHP script on the server. That PHP script, among other things, enumerates over the BBCode and programmatically converts it to HTML, then adding the processed post to the server's database.
