Is this worth watching and/or reading just for Nico?
Yes and no. Nico by herself in the anime makes up a lot of the comedy throughout both seasons, and I personally think that they are pretty funny. But, I do think the anime is more geared towards people who either love music or idols anime. I'd suggest to at least watch thorough the first season (12 ep.) and continue on with the second season if you enjoyed it enough.
Me? I just come for the Maki.
After watching season 1 until she joins the group, I can understand why her birthday was so popular. She is literally made to be the most moe-blob idol. I thought "nico nico ni" was fan-created, until she said it.
Watching both seasons now. Love Live > AKB
Both are horrible. fight me fgt.

Overall idolmaster has a better cast but individually, Haruka (idolmaster) < Honoka (LL), Chihaya (idolmaster) < Umi (LL), Ami or Mami or Hibiki or Miki (idolmaster) < Niko (LL). Takane and Yayoi have the entire LL cast beat.
