There's also the UBW movie..but that was terrible too. Fate/Prototype exists as an OVA that is a re-imagining of F/SN.
A lot. Most of them are spin-offs and the only ones that follow the main story( Unlimited Codes is basically F/SN) are Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia("sequel") eroges. There are many works(VN, game, LN) by Nasu(creator of F/SN) that may take place at the same time and indirectly influence Fate, but do not feature it as the focus. Some LNs in the Fate universe were written by different people given licensing rights by Type-Moon but I don't like them..it's just more Fate/Milking.

From the first season of Fate/Kaleid I watched, I saw reoccurring characters from the series but Fate/Kaleid's universe established them with enough to go on by and most only acted as cameos. It's not really necessary and to gazz from just the cameos you'd have to be sold on the characters/series in the first place.

Yeah the show provides enough to understand, but you don't get the full effect without the prior knowledge.
