No you actually never battle the Champion the first time since your battle will be interrupted. You have to battle the league again but they have a new pokemon and the champions team is rather mixed in types. Think his pokemon are around 70-80?

So I beat the game [the main story, at least] last night, and I am not a happy camper. The ending was cool, it's just when I got back home, the shit started. I get my National Dex after a certain character makes a guest appearance and I fly off to Opelucid City to head on out to Route 11 and beyond, and what do I come to find?

I have finally beaten the game (not really).. Phew, Ghetsis was so tough but most likely the problem lies in my team which was filled with pokemon that I just like to be in there... Some are even unevolved too :(

And Reshiram failed my expectation because it's so weak that I can't even rely on it for a bit.

Experiencing this myself atm.. And guess what~ when I got back and challenge the E4 for the second time, their pokemon level is 71++, so-.... I guess it's still a long way to beat the game and become the real champion....

Actually, from my own experience, you should have no trouble with them even at your current levels. I know I've beaten most of them without any true trouble. There are a few more tricky opponents, but even they can be beaten with a couple of your Pokémon still surviving the battle.

Walked all the way to Undella Town, saw Cynthia in one of the buildings and battled her.

She threw out a lv.75 Spiritomb, I throw out a lv.57 Victini...things did not end well.
