Hera, furious that her husband had cheated on her yet again, punished the unfortunate Lamia. Hera deformed her into a monster and murdered their offspring. She also made Lamia unable to close her eyes, so that she couldn't find any rest from the obsessing image of her dead children.

When Zeus saw what had be done to Lamia, he felt pity for her and gave his former lover a gift: she could remove her eyes, and then put them on again. This way, though sleepless, she could rest from her misfortune.

Lamia spent the remainder of her life roaming the earth feeding on any baby she could find. When no infants could be found.

She would seduce men into having sexual intercourse with her, kill them, and eat them instead. She is reputed to prey upon men and suck the blood of children. Though she is not stupid, and in the right situation can kill and drain a man in minutes.

I think the lamia somewhat enjoys her seductive power over men and like the naughty girl she is "likes to play with her food."

A lamia is born with a strong magical talent, which it can use in the hunt for human flesh.
