A phrase from the Eleventh Book of the Hermetica, expressing the relationship between God and the ensouled beings suffusing all of His creations. At the summit, He created the hierarchy of Eternity (Aion), World (and its orders and systems), Time, and Creation.
In ancient mythologies, the Cosmos (space) was not a category which contained everything in existence, but in itself a higher being. The World – that is, kosmos [Κοσμος] – is forever unchanging, and enshrined itself as an eternal system. The actions of Time (chronos [χÏονος]), a system of the World, manifests the concepts of creation and destruction within that same World. At the same time, opposing Time’s nature of †˜chaotic change’, was Eternity (aion [αιων]), the higher being above the World itself, representing the concept of †˜unchanging self-identity.’
Every being existing within the World is chaotic and full of change, but the fact that they are always themselves does not change. In order for change – and thus, creation and destruction – to be possible for an existence, an †˜x’ factor (change) equivalent to said existence must exist; in reverse, if the †˜x’ factor is not equivalent to the existence, then change is impossible.
That †˜x’ is the Being (ousia [ουσια]).
