This winter I'll be attending Comiket for the second time, and I'm aiming to go all-out. Last time I only went for one day and arrived just couple hours before closing. Plus, some relatives came with me, so I avoided even passing near the adult stuff and ended up buying only music. This time, though, I'll have free reign to go when I want and buy what I want.
Now, that raises a couple of questions. Googling has turned up a few conflicting answers, so I wanted to get clear-cut info from others with experience.
1: What's it like passing through customs with doujins?
Obviously you can find lots of hentai outside Japan, but the letter of the law say that travelers are prohibited from taking pornography out of the country. Is that actually enforced at all? If I carry it with me, is there a risk of getting in legal trouble? How about if I'm carrying a lot of porn, or certain types?
2: How would I want to transport it?
Last time I went to Japan with one checked bag and one carry-on bag. My carry-on was an empty backpack that got filled with CDs on the return trip. Now, would I be able to have doujins in my carry-on? My airline allows two free checked bags, but with the rough handling they endure, I worry about my things getting damaged. Any tips on packing them safely would be helpful.
3: How should I prepare for the weather?
My previous Comiket trip was in summer, and Fakku members' advice on preparing for the heat saved me in a big way. I know winters in Tokyo are supposed to be milder than what we get here in the northern U.S., but should I pack clothes for anything colder than 32°F/0°C?
4: How many circles can I expect to visit in a day?
Suppose I've got a decent-sized shopping list for several people. I already know to line up really early. Will I still have time to explore the convention center at my leisure, or will I essentially have to make a beeline from one destination to the next if I want to hit all of them? Currently I've only got plans to shop for two other people, but I might extend that offer and I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.
5: What other places should I visit?
Comiket is hardly my only reason for going to Japan. I'm always looking for recommendations on other places and events in Tokyo that I ought to check out.
So yeah. Any other feedback is appreciated as well.
