This is also a flag in the story.
[i]In a village at the farthest ends of the world, a girl called Yoshibane lived. And in that village, Yoshibane was offered as a tribute to God. She was destined to be sent off to the heavens on her 13th birthday. That was the law of the village, that was an extremely important thing for the prosperity of the village. Thus, Yoshibane always looked forward to that day, and lived all of her days expecting that day to come. She was very happy, because she would be able to meet God once she reached the age of 13.
Yoshibane was always looking forward to the day of her 13th birthday, and during the afternoon when she was 12, she met a boy. A boy that came from outside the village, and he took the girl to many kinds of places, unknown places to her... a dream-like lake, a magnificent mountain, a warm meadow. The girl passed many happy times with the boy. However, after a few days, the girl said: "Once I reach 13 years, I'll be sent off to the heavens". The boy was astonished, but the girl looked so happy about it, and expecting it so much, that, even if he felt sad as he saw the girl like this, he was glad since the girl was sharing her 'happiness' with him.
Both of them spent half a year together after this, playing together, joking together, and sleeping on the meadows. The boy and Yoshibane were unchanging, yet very close friends. However, as the days passed, the number of times in which the girl talked about her 13th birthday festival increased, and that began to cause a little pain on the chest of the boy. And before soon, every time they met, Yoshibane didn't want to talk about anything else that wasn't about the festival and her meeting with God. This made the boy very bitter, and he spoke to her about it without holding anything back. However, that only made the girl angry, and they had their first quarrel, and that quarrel was what tore their relationship apart.
The girl didn't want to meet the boy again, and the boy, sad and confused about this, walked about in search of her. He looked for her every day, and after 48 days, under a moonlit night, he found her on the spring of the waterfall. The girl just told him: "I hate you". For some reason, he couldn't understand anything of the things he heard the girl say. Still, his overflowing tears didn't do anything more than moistening the already wet spring. The boy embraced Yoshibane, but at the same time, Yoshibane faced the boy, and screamed to him: "Enough already, this is the end! You will never bring the true happiness to me...!" The expression of the boy faded away. At the moment, he didn't understand the meanings behind these words. "If everything was just a false happiness, I was glad with it, but going to God's side, is something I didn't want to dwell in as being the supreme happiness. I always looked forward to, and expected the day of my 13th birthday festival. And that's because, if I don't do it, I won't be able to stand it. If I don't do it, I will only continue lamenting it in this world, forever. Yes, that's it... there's no one that doesn't fear death, there's no one that doesn't suffer with death. So, I simply didn't want to know it".
"I didn't want to know... what...the true happiness is..."
