Just my take: I'm guessing that the guys at LLP were afraid that they, as a physical person, would be sued(?) for translating hentai, which they just couldn't risk (imagine the trial, lol). But to be honest, cease and desists and the like are common, other groups surely have gotten them before.
These complaints are purposely written to frighten you, except that the complaint issuer is mostly powerless (pursuing the issue would be very costly) and can only hope that the fansubber/scanlator stops what he's doing. LLP's reaction seems kind of excessive, in the end I'm sure they could have just stopped scanlating the works of whichever company that contacted them. Surely they weren't just vaguely ordered to cease all operations?
After all, sites like e-hentai and fakku get on just fine, they take down whatever they get DMCA requests for and that's it.
