The Narcissism of PumpJack McGent

My sense of style and hobbies have always been something people have remarked upon- often with a slight sense of admiration. Some have expressed- or in other cases, did- decide to ape some of those qualities (myself and one of my friends have started a number of trends amongst our circles; pipe smoking and the wearing of hats the most noticeable among them. Black leather gloves have also seen a significant increase).

Anyways- not that I'm actively going to encourage you to take any of them up, be your own person first and foremost- here are a couple of sites that I've found that are relevant to my interests. The first one being the most recent discovery (few days ago).

Feel free to peruse them as far as your interest takes you.

The Art of Manliness - A great find, which both amuses and depresses me- since a great many of the topics here seem to me to be common sense. But I guess not.

Gentleman's Emporium - Expensive, but you pay for what you get. The clothes are of fantastic quality, and they wear well. Other items- such as their pocket watches- are less so. Mostly or purely theatrical.

Whisky - For those who are serious about their drink. Reviews, tasting notes, price listings, and- a nice touch- brief histories of the brands and distilleries. Note that 'Whisky' - without the 'e'- refers primarily to Scotch.

Pipes Magazine - A great all-rounder for pipe smoking enthusiasts. As well as pipes, they also cover various brands of tobacco, events, and accompanying drink. Some of things are kinda kitsch- but it's nonetheless fun.

Smoking Pipes - More focused than the above. Pipes and tobacco. That's it. Good for the avid collector.

Foreign Policy - One of my main sources of news. Tonnes of great and insightful articles.

The Blueprints - A little off track, but I find it pretty damned cool. If you've been the kid who never read instructions for Transformers or Legos- this will likely be of interest.

Redundant, since the topic is pretty much exactly that- but I recommend both.

Out of curiosity Pumpjack, what brand of pipe tobacco do you smoke?

Just like my whisky- I'm always on the hunt for something new. There's always more to discover, so limiting yourself- you'll never know what you may be missing.

The brands that feature as a main part of my repetoire, though- are mainly Peterson, Dunhill, and Wo Larsen.

I've tried some Captain Black, Amphora, Solani, and Borkum Riff, too- since they're more readily available. They're alright, but not to my personal taste. Their range features more of the wet, fruitier flavours- whereas I'm more fond of heavier and dryer characters. Oak, whisky, salt.

I've never had much of sweet tooth. So the same applies to pretty much anything. Not a big fine of wine for that exact reason. Cognac and Brandy are the closest I'll get. Ditto for why I don't take mixers or cocktails. I take my liquors straight.

Anyways- back to smokes- your standard tin of tobacco (50g, usually) range around 15-30 dollars, depending on brand and quality. Some mixes are more complex, or have rarer types of weed. But will generally last you much longer than regular smokes. If you smoke a bowl twice a week it'll probably last you around two months or so (depends on the pipe). The tins do a decent job, but if you really want to store it properly so it doesn't dry out and go stale- mason jars are the way to go. Put your tobacco in there, and keep the jars in cool and dark places and they'll keep forever.

I admit that I haven't practiced much. I only slip into it upon occasion.

[size=11]I only have smoked captain black so far since its the only thing I can get locally aside from Criss-Cross(eww). I love pipe smoking. Usually I'll smoke pretty heavily, depending on what I'm doing. Usually go through about 10+ bowls a night, more if I game, less if I watch anime[/h]

Edit: Holy hell, it might just be because I'm on a phone, but 12pt font looks a lot bigger than it should.

But my attire is appropriate for ALL the times. Work, Weddings, Walks, Wassailing- whatever, whenever, wherever.

You're either smoking much too quickly, got a very small pipe, or you're talking about pot.

Ten bowls of a regular tobacco pipe, and you'll have cancer before the weekend's up.

Your average pipe- packed full with a good tobacco- can easily last two hours. I've had one go for over three.

Even if I'm out and about, puffing away like a steam train, will it last at least 40 minutes.

You're also not supposed to smoke out of the same pipe more than twice a day (heck, even twice isn't recommended)- the temperature shifts could lead it to crack if you don't let it adjust properly. You smoke it, clean it, and then let it rest for three days to air out.

If you plan to smoke fairly regularly- like I- it's best to have at least three pipes which you can alternate between.

Also, what would be a nice budget pipe to aim for? Like, budget, but would be of decent build? I wouldn't mind a pipe

Small pipe and I smoke like a damn chimney. And its regular tobacco, I've never had pot before. I suppose I just chain smoke with it. Ashes get down to bottom, dump, clean, new bowl. Repeat. One bowl lasts about half an hour, so I get about 10 on my average recreation night.

Edit: I have a Dr grabow Omega briar I got at a rite aid for about 35 dollars and a Mr. brog old army no.21 briar I got from amazon for 30, but the stem cracked on the old army. :(
