Minoriko is the harvest goddess in Gensokyo. Along with Shizuha, they control the autumn season. Minoriko battled the heroines in Stage 1 on Mountain of Faith. The reason for battling Reimu was suspecting she would be eaten, and the reason for battling Marisa is possibly to demonstrate her power. In Double Spoiler, Minoriko was Aya's practice partner. Other than visiting the Human Village for giving the humans a good harvest, she runs a sweet potato stand.

# The character for Aki means "Autumn", and Minoriko something like "Bountiful child" or "Seed-spreading child". Minori can also just mean "Harvest", and Ko "child", so her name could also just mean "harvest child"

# It makes very much sense for Minoriko to be the younger sister who is the goddess of the harvest as the harvest comes after the changing of the leaves in the season.

# In her official portrait, Minoriko's right foot is drawn like a left foot. It's supposed that ZUN likened her to a Japanese one-legged scarecrow which guards farms. The Japanese term for scarecrow, "kakashi", came from "kagashi", which means "smeller". This may explain why Minoriko talks about her smell in Reimu's scenario.

# Because she and her sister were ranked the lowest of the Windows characters in a year's annual Touhou Popularity Poll, there is a running joke in Japan that they are "original characters" with negligible presence in the games. There is a doujin anthology project dedicated to the Aki Sisters, perhaps to compensate for this.

# In Double Spoiler, it is revealed that she runs a food stand that sells sweet potatoes.

Shizuha Aki is Minoriko Aki's older sister, and was, according to her profile text, under the impression that the heroine in Mountain of Faith was coming to disrupt autumn, which prompted her to attack. She was easily defeated, however, being a mere first-stage midboss.

Hina is the leader of the Nagashi-bina doll army whose job is to scare off lost Humans who get too near to the Youkai Mountain as well as gathering their misfortune. When Hina sees the heroine nearing Youkai Mountain during Mountain of Faith she attempts to scare her off. This isn't because Hina is cruel, she's actually trying to help the heroine who she thinks could be harmed on such a dangerous mountain. However, regardless of her good intentions and claims of being a friend to humans, the heroine isn't too happy with Hina getting in the way and must defeat her.

# The characters for Kagiyama literally mean "key mountain". Hina could mean either "Bird chick" or "Doll."

# She is sometimes referred to by her official title,「厄神」 or "Yakugami" (meaning "misfortune god"), and has become a nickname of sorts, even though it is official.

# Hina is the leader of the "Nagashi-bina doll army." This refers to a Japanese ritual of transferring one's sins and misfortune to a doll (a Nagashi-bina) and throwing it in a river to be carried away.

# Since Hina spins around in Mountain of Faith, she is depicted loving to spin all the time without getting dizzy, most people would say, 'Spin spin, Hina likes to spin.'

# Hina spinning may be a reference to her ability to store up curses. This is because the kanji for curse (厄) looks somewhat like a swirl, just like the one on her dress.

# This has resulted to comparisons between her and Wallachia from Melty Blood, due to Wallachia spinning a lot and screaming "Reverse the birth, reverse death, reverse the world and SPIN SPIN SPIN!" Spin Hina. Spin.

Nitori is a very shy Kappa who lives on Youkai Mountain. In fact, the first time she sees the heroine, she runs off with barely a word. She's good-natured enough, but has an odd way of showing it when she tries to scare the heroine away from the mountain via danmaku and spell cards. It's for the heroine's own good, though, as the mountain is a very dangerous place for humans, and Nitori just doesn't want her to get hurt. She actually likes humans; she just doesn't seem to know how to act around them. During the events of Subterranean Animism, she is one of the Kappas who hears from the God of the sky about the new power of nuclear fusion in the Underworld. However, they are unwilling to go there due to the Oni living underground. Learning that Reimu is going underground to investigate, she convinces Marisa to explore there as well, since she doesn't seem to have anything better to do.

# The characters for Kawashiro mean "river castle", while Nitori is in hiragana. There is a home furnishing chain store named Nitori in Japan, but it seems she has nothing to do with it.

# Nitori is also a Latin word defined as either "brilliance, brightness, glow; splendor" or "perseverance; reliability", all fitting things to associate with such a brilliant engineer.

# Her name might have originated from Ryunosuke Akutagawa's novel Kappa the second chapter of which begins with the sentence 「そのうちにやっと気がついてみると、僕は仰向けに倒れたまま、大勢の河童にとり囲まれていました。」(Sono uchi ni yatto kigatsuite miru to, boku wa aomuke ni taoreta mama, oozei no kappa ni tori kakomarete imashita.) "When at last I came 'round, I found myself lying on my back surrounded by a large number of kappas." — from the translation by Seiichi Shiojiri.

# The Kappa in the series seem to be inspired by the Kappa in the above mentioned novel where they have their own civilization as opposed to their bloodthirsty nature in folklore.

# Nitori's "Optical Camouflage" spell cards may refer to another aspect of kappas that Akutagawa writes about: "But what is most remarkable about kappas is that, unlike human beings, they change colors according to their surroundings."

# Her backpack resembles a tortoise shell. Isn't that fitting for a kappa?

# Nitori is the only playable partner in Subterranean Animism who never appeared in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody; all the rest of the partners did. However, according to an interview with ZUN, she was intended to appear in Touhou Hisoutensoku, but was scrapped due to time constraints.

# As traditional depictions of kappa show a bald spot at the top of their heads, rumor has it that her hat is concealing that bald spot. However, ZUN discredited this rumor during a discussion on 2ch after Mountain of Faith was released.

# Some fan works depict her carrying a Pepsi Ice Cucumber in place of the reed she normally has. (In Japanese folklore, kappas love cucumbers. This is also referenced by Nitori's "Monster Cucumber" spell card.) She's also sometimes depicted wearing a school swimsuit under her dress.

# One of the earliest fan-made vocal arrangements of Nitori's theme music (にとりの唄(萌), Nitori's Song (Moe)) has lyrics that translate as "Kappappa kappappa Nitori, you get more than you pay for with Nitori." The latter part is from the slogan of the above-mentioned Nitori store chain, and several doujinshi have made it into something of an unofficial slogan for her as well. A reference to "kappappa kappappa" subsequently appeared in Subterranean Animism.

# It is speculated that Nitori is one of the kappa who helped Suwako in the construction of Hisoutensoku.

# Aside from Rinnosuke and Yukari, Nitori is considered to be the most technologically advanced in the Touhou universe, often showing her capability to construct modern/futuristic weapons and machinery in fan works.

When the heroine finally reached Youkai Mountain during Mountain of Faith Momiji attempted to stop her at the waterfall. Although Momiji was unsuccessful, it seems she did fulfill her duty of reporting the intruder's presence back to the other Tengu with record speed as a reinforcement Tengu had arrived by the end of the same stage to investigate what was going on.

Later Momiji observed the final battles between the heroine and the newly appeared shrine and its god, apparently without being noticed by any of them.

# "Inubashiri" literally means "dog running". It can also refer to the dirt path outside of castle ramparts used for patrols.

# "Momiji" is one of several Japanese names for maple trees. It can also mean "birch".

# It has been common for fans to call her 「もみじもみもみ」 or "MomijiMomiMomi."As well as "MomijiMomiMomi" some fans have said "もみじは彼女のモミを必要とする" or "Momiji needs her Momi."

# Because Momiji is a white wolf tengu, even though some early fanworks showed her looking indistinguishable from a human, it has become common to depict her with a wolf's ears and tail. Her eyes are often shown to be red, to fit in with the colors of her costume. She is also drawn in fan art wearing an outfit with long sleeves that are detached from the rest of her shirt, such as the sleeves that Reimu and Sanae wear.
o This is official to an extent as she is depicted with detached sleeves and wolf ears in the first chapter of Oriental Sacred Place.

# Since her official profile says "she has a very cooperative personality and executes her duties faithfully" most fan works depict her as acting like a loyal, affectionate puppy.
o Aya's spell card comments in Double Spoiler, however, contradict this personality somewhat, as Aya comments that she and Momiji tend to easily get into fights whenever they meet. Aya also comments that Momiji looks down upon the Crow Tengu. The remarks note that she still serves the Great Tengu faithfully. It should also be noted that fellow crow tengu Hatate's spell card comments suggest that this might be a more personal feud between Momiji and Aya. Hatate herself seems to hold Momiji in high regard.

# Her profile says she plays Dai Shōgi, a game similar to chess, with the Kappa. Because of that, some fans think that she personally knows Nitori while taking a break from her job.

# Momiji's wolf-like appearance may be a reference to the Tiangou, a Chinese version of a Tengu that are described to be more dog-like.
