Suika Ibuki [/h]
Age : Unknown
Species : Oni
Personalities :
Detail at her trivia ...
Abilities : Manipulation of density
Occupation : Drunkard
First Appearance : Immaterial and Missing Power (Touhou 7.5)
Suika is the only oni currently living above ground in Gensokyo, with the remainder of the oni race living underground. Just as the folktales say, she has two horns on her head that symbolize her oni heritage, and enough physical strength to throw large boulders single-handedly. Her personality is jolly and quite childish as you would expect from her appearance. She also likes to drink and loves to party with all her heart.
During the events of
Immaterial and Missing Power, the people of Gensokyo were manipulated into having feasts repeatedly, one right after another, by Suika's ability to "gather" anything. She intended to draw all the other oni out of hiding with continuous, non-stop celebration. In most characters' scenarios, Suika was defeated and the number of feasts began to decrease. In Suika's scenario, she managed to defeat all of her major foes in a feast, but her plan failed anyway due to Reimu's ability and her own short-comings as an oni.
In Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, she notices that temperaments are being gathered from everyone into the sky, so she decides to climb up the
Youkai Mountain to follow them. Once she reaches the heavens, she locates the perpetrator. Instead of trying to put an end to whatever plot was going on, Suika demands a living space in the heavens. She later gathers everyone to the heavens to attack Tenshi Hinanawi, although whether it was to punish the celestial or just to pass the time is unclear.

- Main place of activity :
Mountain of Youkai
- A long time has passed since oni were last seen in Gensokyo. However, there have been recent confirmed reports of oni sightings. Those are of Suika Ibuki. She suddenly dropped in and settled down in Gensokyo for some reason.
- Her body is small, and the two long horns on her head stand out in contrast from her short stature.
- She may not look terribly frightening compared to other youkai, but she is an oni. She is possessed of enormous strength, and boasts that if she wanted to, she could tear down the Mountain of Youkai by herself
- A drinker without peer, she always carries around a gourd filled with sake, from which she constantly imbibes. As a result, there are no reports of her behaviour when sober.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Power of Manipulating Density
- This is the power to alter the density and thickness of anything.
- All things become a fine mist if their density becomes low; conversely, dense objects have higher temperatures and melt, etc.
- Because she loves the bustle of festivals and merrymaking, she would periodically cause humans and youkai to assemble and hold festivals.
- This ability to cause humans and youkai to assemble is a manifestation of her power over density.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eyewitness Reports
- "She can do physical work, she collects the garbage, she is useful in a sense" (Reimu Hakurei)
- "I wonder if she could help me gather unusual things" (Sakuya Izayoi)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Countermeasures
- As knowledge about oni and methods of their extermination have lost in modern times, it's best not to even attempt to destroy them.
- There is absolutely no chance for victory.
- However, tentatively, there are a few methods of protecting yourself from an oni.
- For example, you can run a holly branch through a sardine head and place it in front of the entrance to your house.
- It's said this will prevent an oni from coming near you, but it's unknown how effective this is.
Bunbunmaru Trivia[/h]
# "Suika" (if written as "西瓜" or "æ°´ç“œ") can mean watermelon, a fruit the Japanese commonly enjoy in summer. Here, though, "èƒé¦™" (also pronounced "Suika") means something like "gathering fragrance". Her last name "伊å¹" (Romanized: "Ibuki", Meaning: "Chinese Juniper") can sound like "the wind is blowing".
# "Ibuki" is also the name of a mountain where oni lived.
# Suika's name is similar in appearance to that of Shuten Douji, the leader of the oni that lived on Mt. Ooeyama. As a result, some Japanese fans think she might be based somewhat on Shuten Douji. Shuten Douji is sometimes said to have been abandoned after birth at the foot of Mt. Ibuki, and to have been previously been known as Ibuki Douji.
èƒé¦™ (Suika - gathering, fragrance)
é…’å‘‘ (Shuten - alcohol, drink)
# The Ibuki Gourd she always carries is a magical treasure of the oni, and can produce an infinite amount of sake. In
Strange and Bright Nature Deity, she explains that the gourd contains the extract of a wine worm, an oni capable of creating a near endless amount of sake from just a little bit of water.
# Suika is shown to have little clones of herself in official works. She
rips out some of her hairs and creates either flying or running mobs of mini-Suikas as an attack in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Immaterial and Missing Power.
# A silhouette of Suika occupies the front of Immaterial and Missing Power's jewel case.
# Aya Shameimaru, who has probably seen or heard of nearly every youkai by now, once referred to Suika as "simply the most powerful youkai in Gensokyo". That doesn't mean there aren't others that could be nearly equal to her power, but she is still thought of as the strongest/most powerful youkai in Aya's opinion. Of course, this may be because she is a tengu, who were once subordinate to the oni.
# Despite her popular image as a carefree and laid-back drunkard, she can be very observant and harshly critical of others. In Immaterial and Missing Power, she cuts down almost everyone she encounters with her dialogue, such as by calling Alice Margatroid a coward and telling Youmu Konpaku how people make fun of her. Also, in her interview with Aya, she calls out the tengu on her two-faced attitude in regards to Oni and everyone else.
# In Immaterial and Missing Power Suika's final spellcard, "百万鬼夜行" (Romanized: "Hyakuman Ki Yakou", Meaning: "A Million Oni Parade the Night", cf. the 1776 Japanese work: "
画図百鬼夜行", meaning: "The Illustrated Night Parade of A Hundred Demons") (Also known as "Pandemonium"), is capable of completely erasing the HUD, leaving the player unable to know directly how much life/super meter either has.
# Three accessories linked in chain is an inspiration of
Sengai's untitled work. It is generally called "○△□" (maru sankaku shikaku, circle triangle square). What he meant is unknown, but the museum owning it once made a commentary that the square is the self who doesn't undergo training, the triangle is that who are in training, and the circle is that who completes training and reach the enlightenment. On the other hand,
Daisetsu Suzuki thinks; The circle is the symbol of nothingness —
nothing as non-existance. The triangle is the most basic substance or the smallest unit — the diagram to be formed with the least number of lines. The square is the combination of two right triangles — one example of everything that can be made from some triangles, or of existances of complex substance containing particles of the smallest unit, i.e., atoms. And here comes the circle, the infinity, again, which you can understand if you have knowledge of
regular polygons. And the totality of this three diagrams is the universe... This interpretation could be understood as the metaphor of mathmatics: Circle {0} Triangle {1} Square {2, (3, 4, 5...)} Circle {∞} the Set of Three {all the possible combination of all natural numbers}.
# An alternate palette of her in
Touhou Hisoutensoku makes her completely gold, a possible Guilty Gear/Blazblue reference. Another palette gives her a red ribbon and a dark blue dress, somewhat similar to Keine in appearance.
# Suika is the only character to appear as a boss in both Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler.
# Suika and
Yuugi Hoshiguma are part of "Deva of the Mountain"
# Tenshi Hinanawi is Suika's Neighbor in
Heaven.
