Sakuya Izayoi[/h]
-
The Perfect, Elegant Maid
Probably the most enigmatic denizen of Scarlet Devil Mansion, surpassing even the Mistress of the mansion, Remilia Scarlet.
Among the vast cast of Touhou, Sakuya is in strict cadre of my favorites. She is no doubt the very epitome of enigma, even more so than Yukari Yakumo. She radiates unsurpassed, yet cold beauty. She is elegant and polite, yet one cannot help but notice a certain manner of .. shall we call it slyness, that she enjoys with Remilia. Her countless remarks about those that intrude upon her Lady’s time, and those less competent employees of Scarlet family would point to the fact that her own elegance and politeness may be a way of her gently mocking the world around. Or she may be a genuine perfect servant.
This contradiction runs across entirety of Sakuya’s history. We know that she works for Remilia Scarlet. But how did it come to be? Some say that she was a vampire hunter that lost a bid to Remilia and was either forced into servitude, or that Remilia took pity upon her and taken her on as a servant.
But is it really the truth? If Sakuya was a genuine vampire hunter, than how would she form such close bond with Remilia, one that presumably didn’t only beat her, but made her a servant as well? Even if that were possible, than for Remilia the prospect of having a servant with such fearsome power as Sakuya’s without definite and absolute obedience would be simply asking for a calamity. And if Sakuya was a vampire hunter, than no guarantee of loyalty would be sufficient for Remilia.
But if Sakuya wasn’t a vampire hunter, than who would she be? She is certainly not a Youkai, but not fully a human either. To add further to the confusion, Eirin Yagokoro seems to recall Sakuya and her Lunar Dial. Moreover, Sakuya, despite being “merely” human, does not getting insane when faced with the Full Moon.
Is she a Lunarian than? Or did Eirin construct her Lunar Dial and presented it to her? Or would Sakuya be a quasi-human – a Homunculus that was spawned by some Lunarian medical experiment?
It is this uncertainness that draws to her. She is mysterious, and will not reveal her secrets so easily.
Especially with her power.
Unlike some other enigmatic characters, Sakuya most certainly has the strength to go with her. Manipulating time itself is no small feat, and certainly as fearsome as one might think. Sakuya can gut you a hundred times over, and you wouldn’t even notice it, until your vision would suddenly cut out. And her demeanor would easily suggest that she’s more than familiar with putting out miserable beings like you out of their misery.
It is this amazing power and enigma that surrounds her which makes Sakuya one of my favorites. That and her magnificent silvery hair.
She will undoubtedly remain one of the most prolific characters of Touhou franchise, a silvery ,enchanting shadow that stalks the Scarlet Manor.

Note[/h] [size=10]by Room101[/h] :
If you have any suggestions, I'm happy to listen. I've focused mostly on Sakuya's persona, and the theories that make her fascinating.
Very interesting take on Sakuya, Roomy. Since I'm still learning a lot about Touhou, I don't know how valid my opinion is, by my theory is that Sakiya is indeed a vampire hunter, and is working with Remilia either as an undercover operation, or because they are after a common goal. Also, it might not be a bad idea to ally with a vampire, since Remilia does indeed seem rich, and can access supplies easily. Or, maybe Remilia is after a specific vampire and she can't do it alone, so she enlisted Sakuya. I'm thinking that some kind of contract was made between the two, but I'm also thinking that it was more of a mutual thing rather than some kind of brainwashing or hypnosis or the like.
