Here's my article on Flandre Scarlet for Hatate's Blogpost.
Flandre Scarlet, Devil’s Little Sister

“I haven't gone out even once in the past 495 years.” – Flandre Scarlet, Reimu Arc[/h]
Flandre Scarlet is the boogey-man in the basement. This of course, only refers to the Scarlet Devil Mansion (from here on out, it will be known as SDM) where Flandre lives. Flandre is a vampire, much like her sister Remilia, but is thought to be either the most powerful, or one of the most powerful youkai that currently live in Gensokyo. This is due to Flandre’s ability to destroy everything. What makes matters worse is the fact that she has some mental instability, as mentioned as a footnote in her entry in Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red by ZUN.
Personality

"That person acts like she understands everything from the beginning.
She talks about understanding fate or something." - Bohemian Archive Interview[/h]
To say a bit more on her ability of being able to destroy everything, it is wise to just let your imagination guide your thoughts. Flandre describes her ability as being able to move the “eye” of objects and things into her hand. When the “eye” is in her hand, she is able to break that “eye”, which in turn destroys whatever the “eye” belonged to. This a very frightening power, and is most likely the reason for her sequestering.
Because Flandre hasn’t been out of the SDM in nearly 500 years, there is little if nothing to say about her early life. It is widely thought that because of her destructive ability, her sister kept her locked away in the basement of the SDM. By being sequestered from the rest of Gensokyo, this is also thought to fuel her mental instability. I believe the mental instability is the need for her to feel like she’s wanted and that she doesn’t have to be alone, kind of like a child, competing against her instincts of feeding and bloodlust. For having been sequestered for nearly 500 years, I can see how she would need to feel like she’s wanted and to not feel like she’s all alone. I believe that Flandre does take on the child role more often than not and this can be seen in some of her statements she makes. However, she does still have a vast store of knowledge within her, and she does know about most of the things people talk about, despite behaving like a child. This can be seen when she first meets Marisa.
In some fandom, it is shown that Flandre has a strong connection with Meiling. I don't know the full details on this relationship, but I think it might be because of how the both of them are treated in the SDM.
Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

"Will you play with me?" - Flandre Scarlet, Marisa Arc[/h]
Th06: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil offers us a small look into the life of Flandre. Even though we don't find out her entire story, we do find all of her emotions and experiences coming at us in the form of her dangerous danmaku.
Q.E.D. "Ripples of 495 Years" is, in my mind and opinion, all of her emotions and experiences coming at you at one time. This is to signify the end of her confinement within the basement of the SDM. You can tell she's excited about her coming out, by the way the bullets speed up as time goes on.
Now, it is shown in the Reimu and Marisa arcs on how she treats the two heroines. During the Reimu arc, Flandre doesn't take well to Reimu. This might be due to the fact that Reimu doesn't like Remilia, and with Flandre being her sister, doesn't want anything to do with her either. On the other hand, Flandre and Marisa enjoy some friendly banter between each other. This friendly exchange is widely brought up in fandom culture as the starting point of their friendship. This friendship is usually shown in the form of Flandre hanging all around Marisa.
Forbidden and Taboo
We might be able to glimmer some truth behind Flandre if we were to look closely at her spell cards. In my opinion, I don't think there is much to say. I think her spellcards are based off of her mental instability. Taboo usually refers to things that are not thought to coincide with the standards of society, so it can infer that her Taboo cards might relate to things that she had done before coming to Gensokyo and becoming a vampire. This could also refer to her enormous strength and her ability to destroy everything, as some of these cards did lead to some level of destruction when they occurred.
Afterwords
Flandre is a very strong youkai, but if you were to look a lot closer at her, she is a very fragile girl.
We don't know what kind of life Flandre had prior to Gensokyo, but we can conclude that she had a horrible time while she was locked up in the SDM. It is a sad realization that Flandre has never really had anyone to play with or to talk with for most of her stay in the SDM.
Flandre tries to seek out people and other youkai that will be able to understand her for who she is, and to actually become friends with. This is very hard for her to do, as she's never had contact with anyone outside of the SDM, and usually just ends up blowing the people she meets to smithereens. Or is it possible that she just wants to meet people who are stronger than her and will be able to last against her?
Flandre doesn't have very many people close to her to support her. Before her breaking out of the basement, she'd only have relied on those that brought her food every so often when she would get hungry. But now that she's let out of the basement, she is able to talk and spend time with those living at the SDM, even if she can only get a small amount of time to spend with them.
To me, Flandre is more than just a dangerous youkai. She is a girl trying to reach out to people. She is trying to find someone that will accept her for who she is and who will be there for her for the rest of her life. I feel attached to her, and I wish that I could be with her, but I know that this is all just a made-up story of an imaginary place.
To me, Flandre is the most precious gift that was given to Gensokyo.
