in retail and we work in shifts of 4 hour, but if work more then for we get 30 minute break and if we work more then 7 1/2 hour we get 1 hour lunch and 2 x 15 minute break

Technically, by US labor laws, if someone works 6 hours, the employer is required to give two paid 15 minute breaks and one unpaid half hour break. If you work a 9 hour shift, you are given one unpaid hour lunch break.

Scratch what I said earlier. That's for the specific state I live in. There are no federal break laws that mandate employers to give breaks. However, if your employer does give you a 5-20 minute break, they have to pay you under federal law. If the break is a half hour or longer, it is unpaid by federal law.
