@ Hamlet, Watanabe had a part in it, but wasn't Head Director IIRC. Michiko to Hatchin was decent, creative, and of course fantastic OST (pretty much everything with Watanabe's name on it has this so no surprise ;)), but I wasn't a fan of the
also episode 5 of Space Dandy reminded me of the series as well (The one with Adelie, alien child with the body swapping power)
Yeah, he was just the producer, but I mention him simply because it really feels like a series he would have made in terms of its "stand alone episode stories"; they're not
as stand-alone as something like Muchroom Samba from Bebop or something, but there are a couple that feel very much like Samurai Champloo episodes like the one with Pepe Lima, or when Hatchin joins the circus, etc.
The director is actually the same lady that did the Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine anime which I also own, but have never had a chance to sit down and watch yet. She should do more things though; her female leads are some of the best. I appreciate the lack of ecchi crap around them and instead making them sexy in other ways/for other reasons.
But regarding the ending:
It is definitely something I can see being hit or miss with people, but I honestly kind of loved it. I thought it had enough to it to make it feel like "Okay, this wasn't a total waste of their time" while also making it so it was one of those "It's nice to have an end to journey toward, but in the end, it is the journey that matters most" types of things.
