Again, people will more or less say the same thing whether it's a chat window or a google document. "Keeping people honest" is a bit of an overstatement.
Though it's a nice side effect, once again it's not the main purpose to keep people honest.
The main purposes are for polishing one's skills and becoming more adaptable.
I like the niche purpose it serves for me, and perhaps a small portion of other writers.
One doesn't need to be 'paranoid' to enjoy the benefits of basic, real-time chat via keystrokes.
I respect your opinions, but in this case, I disagree with them.
However, as I respect your right to have those opinions I will not badger you to agree with me.
I am simply defending my position and explaining that my opinion is another valid opinion, alongside yours.
Yes, there are people whose privacy may be infringed, but it is wholly up to them whether or not to participate in the chat in the first place.
Not to mention, the results are generally helpful and harmless unless someone will ill intentions decides to make an example of someone.
It's not like anyone's giving their info away or selling their email address, so I don't see the harm in it.
As for why I personally don't use messengers that often - sure, it's not completely transparent, but that's mainly an excuse.
The biggest reason is - I'm very inconsistent in using IMs and social media.
I go on discord about once a week on average, though there are times I'm on every day for a few hours.
I rarely ever use facebook or and social media.
I mostly either stick to these forums or talking to people in real life.
So, having more diverse options to chat with people is not bad for me and makes life a little more interesting.
Edit: Oh, not to mention having thing on the same webpage when I do my writing is helpful in the case of discussions about the story itself.
That's one of the reasons I started using it to chat in the first place.
