Why didn't just send Frodo on an eagle?

Yeah,why?...Is not like they had anything better to do.

The entire plot of both LOTR and The Hobbit would be severely shortened if they abused those eagles.

I don't really think it would be too hard for Sauron to grab a few drakes to deal with the eagles.

And I don't really think an eagle would stand a chance against something like this:



And yes, Gandalf does mention that cold-drakes exist.

But if that's true,how come Gandalf could be rescued from Isengard?

Supposedly the Eagles would either be affected by the Ring or they'd be shot down/preoccupied by the Nazgul's Winged Steeds.

You do have a point though seeing as how Gwaihir rescued Gandalf unscathed.

And besides.....

There are no Nazguls in Isengard, nor is it nearly as heavily defended as Mordor.

One does not simply fly into Mordor.

Things would have gone much more smoothly had Gandalf possessed Magneto's powers.

I think they had the same stance on the war as the Ents did when Merry and Pipin told them about Isengard (before they found out what Saruman was doing to the forest).

Gandalf wanted to use the eagles, he just didn't want anyone to know that was the plan incase Saruman would get word of it and counter the eagles. Unfortunately Gandalf fell with that balrog without being able to clearly tell the plan to Frodo and the others, instead he says "Fly, you fools" expecting them to understand all the while giving as less information as possible.

The entire reason for their long journey taking another path than the main path was especially to reach the eagles without saruman knowing about it.
