It's not a matter of whether your pc is garbage or not, it's a matter of efficiency and skype is not optimized as well comparatively.

I just don't notice any performance issues and I have Skype constantly signed in.
Though I don't game on it or have lots of big programs installed either.
I also didn't install any call features. Just the basic IM bits.

If that is all you need and it works for you, that's great. I'm not saying you should delete skype or anything. I personally play games and the like while using programs similar similar to skype and I've had much less problems with discord. I just like that it's very smooth and has a lot of customization, as well as lots of other neat features like embedded videos, talking to literally anyone without having to add their call info or what not.

Oh right. Fair enough.
