I would say I still havea fair bit of room for improvement but I get by with it. I'm planning on taking jlpt 2 kyuu this winter if that helps situate my level. And yeah, kanji doesn't make it the easiest language to learn so it's good that you like them.
I found that what really helped me was reading visual novels with a text hooker to display the readings of different kanji as I go along. I started doing this like maybe 2ish years ago and I now only need to use it for overly specific terms like locations, medical terms etc. It sorta allowed me to apply the grammer knowledge I had built up in the classes I took previously without constantly having to look up kanji and overtime I learnt the readings of a good chunk of them plus got practice reading in general.
You must be rather proficient in the language if you want to take JLPT 2! I struggle with the grammar personally speaking. Test me on particles and I feel like throwing someone out of the window. I hate listening comprehension. Japanese is spoken incredibly quickly. It almost feels like an Indian language in that respect.
To tell you the truth, I feel that Japanese has grammar as complex as English, spoken as quickly as Indian languages and has vocabulary and characters imported from the Chinese language. Not the best mix.
As for me, I find Chinese characters (I refuse to call it 'kanji') easy because I have some knowledge of the Chinese language. Knowing Chinese does help with your Japanese.
(Learning Chinese on the other hand is really difficult unless you are brought up with it since young because it is hard to write and hard to utter. The grammar is easy though unlike Japanese.)
