I am currently doing that. And to make your cat pay attention to you, follow theses steps:
1. Take your cat to a vet.
2. Make the cat stay there.
3. Get a dog.
4. ???
5. Fuck that. Cats are better.
On a more serious note: Think of the cat as a queen. She will call you, when she needs you. So basically to get her attention, you should feed and caress her; play and cuddle with her.
