5.1 audio?

I have spent unordinary amounts of time with my 5.1 surround system for my computer, trying unremittingly to get the two speakers in the back to be more audible. I am speaking, of course, of the back left and back right speakers. Here's my problem; I want them to be much more audible [if I were to guess, I would say that when my front speakers are at fifty percent volume, they are at twenty, thus being overpowered easily]. Thing is, I have used to Realtek 'Room Correction' feature to increase the decibles of the back speakers, and that would work well to increase the volume. I considered the problem fixed for a while, until I noticed that room correction was making my speakers sound shorted. The feature was cutting the front three speakers in and out, left to right [then back again] in order to compensate for something I don't know. My front three speakers are within six inches of each other, and all three are five feet from my back speakers. I have tried adjusting the distance of each speaker in the Room Correction control panel, but that doesn't seem to fix the 'speaker short' effect that is going on. The front speakers really sound horrible with the feature equipped! The back ones' are soooooo much better at the same time. Finally, after wanting to stab my eardrums with a sterling-silver spoon, I disabled the feature. So, to sum up my question, does anyone know how to make the back speakers in a 5.1 system audible without mucking up the sound of the front three? I know that I have all of my speakers set up correctly; even if I didn't know how to set them up, [which I certainly do] they are color coded. I also know that each speaker is working. The back speakers emit sound, just not very loudly. Well, for anyone that may answer this question, I thank you deeply. I love my music [and my movies] and I can't stand not getting the full effect of 5.1 from my system, and I shudder to think that I only have the choice of sacrificing one three of my speakers for the other two. If you had a Creative card, I could help you out a lot more because they have a "surround mixer" app that lets you adjust the volume of each speaker independently just like you are asking. Not too sure what realtek has to offer but I've only heard bad things with their onboard audio.

On top of that, I never thought to take into account that I am currently running onboard, so the software/drivers might blow. Thanks a million man [I'ma get me a Creative card] and +rep :)

I highly suggest you get an x-fi xtremegamer. Most cheap cards out there don't even have hardware acceleration and that card is the cheapest of the x-fi family that does (the xtremeaudio does not!). You can get an oem card from newegg for $75 or the retail box for $90
Currently, I'm using an old audigy SE card that doesn't have hardware acceleration but it still does a pretty decent job. I had to hunt all over for the right driver to make it work perfectly though but you shouldn't have that kind of trouble with the card I suggested.
If you want to do some benchmarking on your audio setup, I suggest you use a tool called rightmark 3d sound. It'll show how much cpu you are eating up and it will detect all sorts of stuff about how capable it is. (my audigy se has eax 4.0 and 64 hardware buffers, but that xtremegamer should have eax 5.0 and 128 hardware buffers)

Sweetness! I've kinda been outta the audio card market for a little while [which has set me back a bit]. I appreciate the heads up; its' put me back on track with audio card technologies. The only thing that concerns me is eax. I have been hearing a lot about eax incompatibilities with Vista [and driver issues] but that was quite a while ago and I'm hoping 5.0 has fixed some of the issues.

Friend of mine has one of those high end Creative cards. He hates the drivers, and gets CPU load up the arse when he uses the 2ch->5:1ch.
Otherwise, it's an alright purchase. In my opinion. I just use the built in 7:1 on my motherboard. Yes, I get the classic 'snap crackle and pop' from everything else on the mobo, but otherwise I don't mind too much.
