Apparently there was an underground tunnel that lead back to the other side, no, seriously.

That wouldn't surprise me. When I lived in Indiana for a year they had this huge underground passage way for tornado evacuation. I was wondering that myself and thought maybe the buildings connected by a overbridge across the street. (My last school had a indoor bridge connecting two buildings, not over a street but had one. I figured maybe the kids just walked upstairs to the other building and came back down.
