Have a look at any manga or anime series. How many western people do you see listed in the credits? It's a nice dream but I wouldn't aim for it realistically. Broaden your horizons and learn as many different techniques and styles as possible and try not to get caught up on anime style only; it really is the death of some great potential in many a person. I'm not saying give it up, but keep it as a hobby or side project and continue honing it then you might find it useful at some point in your career.
That never stopped
Michael Arias. He was the first non-japanese person to be the director of a japanese anime movie - Tekkonkinkreet (and it's Studio 4ºC!).
And this actually further proves my point. He didn't start off in manga, he had a varied background and gained a lot of experience. He also lived in Japan a long time prior to making that movie and is fluent in Japanese. Once again, he worked hard and was probably lucky on a few occasions too. The style of that movie was pretty cool though, I remember they had it playing on the big screens in Shibuya one time.
